Who Can Go?
MMI invites caring, flexible people with a good sense of humor; especially dentists, family practitioners, emergency or internal medicine physicians, pediatricians, anesthesiologists, surgeons (general, otolaryngology, plastic, ophthalmology, orthopedic and GYN), and trained counselors.
We need optometrists, opticians, nurses, CNS, NP & PAs, CRNAs, pharmacists, OR techs, dental hygienists, translators, lab technicians, fix-it people, physical therapists, health educators, prayer walkers, and general helpers. Veterinarians (large or small animal) are invited to Honduras projects. Summer projects are planned so families can bring teenagers.
Two-thirds of project participants are medical professionals; one-third have no medical training at all – and ALL can help integrally!
Accommodations and medical facilities determine the size of each volunteer team. If we plan a project for three surgeons, two anesthetists, two family practice physicians and two dentists, we also know how many nurses, students, OR techs, dental hygienists, and general helpers we can accept. Speaking the local language is a real plus, especially for a health education assignment.
How much does an MMI project cost?
Participants pay for personal airfare plus a participation fee:
- 2 weeks:
$1295 for the U.S.
$1350 for Canada - 1 week:
$895 for the U.S.
$930 for Canada
A registration portion of $100 US/CDN may be transferred to another project, but is not refundable unless the project is canceled.
The actual cost of a 2 week MMI project is approximately $1500 US and $1385 CDN per participant.
The difference between the real cost and the participation fee is made up through donations to our global ministry.
In order to fulfill its ministry all around the world, MMI relies on nearly $2 million annually in generous donations.
Are expenses tax-deductible?
Medical Ministry USA is incorporated in Texas as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt, non-profit organization. Medical Ministry Canada Inc is a Registered Charitable Organization in Canada. You will receive our receipt for US or Canadian tax purposes from the appropriate country’s office.
Do patients pay for MMI services?
Commonly, we charge our patients a very nominal medical fee. MMI seeks to charge these nominal fees to patients in order to encourage dignity and personal responsibility.
Having said that, many patients do receive care at no cost whatsoever – and no patient is ever turned away for lack of funds. We have had some people pay with livestock, including a woman who once paid with a live, squawking chicken. In all we do, we seek to dignify people in the name of Jesus; and so we try to cultivate in them the sense both of responsibility and dignity, as already mentioned. And any income received is always extremely modest – minimal in line with their own very limited incomes.
How is MMI 500 funded?
While the work of MMIs short-term projects and the MMI 500 Centers are united with the mission of serving the world’s poor, the funding for the two programs is maintained separately. MMI Project Fees and donations to the Global Ministry are used solely for our short-term programs. Support for our Permanent Centers is raised entirely through separate MMI funding.
